Cummins Makes Choice

When Evan Cummins first arrived at Northfield Mount Hermon in the fall of 2009 he became a priority recruit for the Ivy League almost instantaneously.  In the 18 months since his recruitment has only continued to grow in correlation with the development of his game, eventually drawing interest from schools in the Big East and Pac 10 as a result.

Ultimately though, Cummins stayed true to his original goal which was to go to the top academic school that he possibly could and so he committed to Harvard on Tuesday.

While Cummins is the 16th Northfield Mount Hermon prospect to commit to the Ivy League in the last five years, his high levels of recruitment made his situation a unique one.

“At first his goal was to prove to everyone that he was a high level kid, and then commit to Harvard,” NMH head coach John Carroll said.

With his plan adjusted, and the pressure of the recruiting process now off his shoulders, Carroll predicts that Cummins will prove any of his critics wrong both this summer as well as during his senior year.

“I think it’s hard to call anybody a steal for Harvard anymore,” Carroll said, “but I think he brings them something that they don’t currently have at six-eight which is an athletic and smart player who can play inside and out, is a good passer, and a very good defender.”

Cummins found himself a key part of the rotation from day one at Northfield and saw his stock rise dramatically as he helped lead NMH to the finals of the 2010 National Prep Championship.  After a solid summer on the travel circuit with the New England Playaz, he averaged close to a double-double this year with 10 points and 9 rebounds per game.

Cummins is the first player to commit to Harvard in the class of 2012.  Northfield Mount Hermon will have 11 active players in the Ivy League next year and 30 playing division I basketball.
