Colson Picks Fighting Irish

St. Andrew’s School and BABC forward Bonzie Colson made a verbal commitment to Notre Dame on Monday morning, announcing his decision at a school meeting.

He chose the Fighting Irish over Florida State but had previously been offered by the likes of Pittsburgh, Miami, Connecticut, Seton Hall, Iowa State, Georgetown, Minnesota, and others.

“It was just the right fit for me on and off the court,” Colson said.  “I’ll have a chance to play right away.  I loved the coaching staff, loved the atmosphere, and it’s a great tradition.”

Seton Hall was the only of those programs to have offered Colson prior to last year’s AAU season, when he absolutely exploded on Nike’s EYBL circuit, establishing himself as one of the most efficient players in the country.

He averaged over 18 points per game while shooting over 56% from the field and 79% from the free-throw line while also adding close to 7 rebounds, over 2 blocks, 2 assists, and one steal per game.

Perhaps even more impressive than his efficiency was his consistency. He scored in double figures in all but one of BABC’s EYBL games this season, while finishing with between 15 and 24 points in 11 of their 16 contests.

His production was a huge reason why BABC was able to return to the EYBL Finals at the Nike Peach Jam and earned him spots in the most prestigious camps the nation has to offer including the NBA Players’ Association Camp and Lebron James Skills Academy.

Colson was no less productive during his junior season at St. Andrew’s, emerging into one of the top performers in all of the NEPSAC, and leading the Saints to the finals of the Class AA tournament before losing a heartbreaker to Cushing Academy.

With his recruitment now behind him and his AAU career completed, leading St. Andrew’s to that elusive title remains the last piece of unfinished business in what has been a tremendous high school career.

“It’s definitely a relief to get this off my best,” Colson said of his recruitment, “and now the focus is on getting that NEPSAC Class AA championship, which has been the goal since we got back to school this fall.”
