BH-RL Tournament – Event Recap

The annual Belmont Hill – Roxbury Latin Holiday Basketball Tournament took place this weekend hosting St. Andrew’s School, Tabor Academy, Master’s School, Brimmer & May School, St. Sebastian’s School, and Christian Heritage in addition to the two host clubs.  

St. Andrew’s ran away with the tournament championship, winning all three of their games by at least 20 points, and improving to 11-0 on the season.  

The Saints opened with a 78-44 win over Belmont Hill before scoring an impressive 69-49 win over a talented Master’s team.  A 70-50 win over Tabor Academy during Saturday’s final would earn them the championship.  

Junior forward Bonzie Colson led the way with three straight double-doubles while Agyei Gregory also cracked double figures in all three games.  John Geary and Chancellor Ellis led the team’s three-point assault, both finishing in double figures twice on the weekend, as did junior center Andre Berry who also did a nice job battling Tabor big man Jarred Reuter in the final.  Head coach Michael Hart was also quick to credit post-graduate guards Tim Reale and Richard O’Brien for providing stability in the backcourt.  

Tabor reached the finals with an opening 57-46 win over Christian Heritage and a 56-48 win over Roxbury Latin in the semifinal.  Reuter and Miles Wright continued to be the team’s primary one-two punch on the offensive end while Bryce Boggs made some nice contributions up front and C.J. Ward continued to showcase his three-point shooting.  

Roxbury Latin opened the weekend with 60-56 win over Brimmer & May.  Junior guard Pat Benzan led the way with 23 points, 7 assists, and 5 rebounds and also became the youngest player in school history to reach the 1,000 point mark.  

Christian Heritage guard Jacob Clark would reach the 1000 point plateau a day later, during a 24 point performance which helped Christian Heritage knock off St. Sebastian’s 46-34.  

Brimmer & May would rebound from their opening loss to finish the weekend with a 2-1 record after a win over Belmont Hill.  Sammy Mojica and Andrew Simpson continued to show flashes of their long-term potential while seniors Jake Fay, John Powell, and K.J. Baptiste all played well at various times.  Sultan Olusekun was Belmont’s top playmaker while Hilal Dahlel showed a dangerous lefty shooting stroke behind the three-point line.  

Master’s opened with a commanding win over St. Sebastian’s before falling to St. Andrew’s in the semifinal.  Austin Carter and Donte Gittens formed a potent inside-out tandem while senior guard Brian Nguru also stepped up.  Jordan Byrdie did most of the playmaking for St. Sebastian’s while freshman forward Matt Karpowicz showed some raw long term potential as well.
