Barry Earns Scholarship

Brooks School’s senior swingman Anthony Barry made a verbal commitment to Merrimack College on Sunday, accepting a full scholarship offer from the division II school.

Barry spent the first three years of his high school career at Milford before transferring to Brooks and repeating his junior year and his first season in the NEPSAC turned out to be a break-out year as he earned first team all New England honors in class B after leading Brooks to over 20 regular season wins.

When Barry continued to impress on the AAU circuit, Merrimack became the first school to offer him a full scholarship.  It wasn’t long before they found other programs from the Northeast 10 Conference following suit, but ultimately their perseverance paid off.

Barry’s career with the Middlesex Magic dates back three years giving him the opportunity to learn under Mike Crotty Jr., and well as the late Mike Crotty Sr.

“Anthony is one of the hardest working people I have had the chance to coach,” Crotty Jr. said.  “His maturity and development as a player have been remarkable.”

It was that development that was at the heart of last year’s breakout performance as his long hours of hard work in the gym allowed his skill set to begin to catch up with his undeniable power and athleticism.

A physical specimen who was always known more for his defense and penetration than he was his skill set, Barry has now added a consistent pull-up game to his offensive arsenal and become more of a threat from behind the three-point line to make him a much more versatile and very dangerous scorer.

“This is a great situation for Anthony,” Crotty Jr. said.  “He is a fantastic person who I am thrilled to have had the chance to get to coach.  I am very proud of Anthony and excited for his future.”
