Banegas Staying in Beantown

When Marco Banegas finished his four year career at O'Bryant last June he wasn't quite ready to leave Boston, opting against heading to college and instead deciding to do a fifth season at the Brimmer & May School.

A year later and Banegas' decision making process has a similar pattern as he put an end to his recruiting process on Friday with a commitment to Northeastern University, located within the city of Boston's borders.

"It's a good school and it's in my backyard so my family and friends can come see me play." he said.  "Plus it's an opportunity to play in the CAA."

An attacking lead guard known for his ability to make plays with the ball in his hands, Banegas was one of the best point guard prospects left on the board.

"It's a great fit for me as far as academics and athletics as well," he said.  "Everyone always says what a great coach Coach Coen is and all of the coaches have a real good relationship so it was a family type atmosphere."

Banegas said he spent time on the Northeastern campus last week but opted against a formal official visit because the school was so close to his home.

Northeastern is landing a guard who has had nothing but success over the course of his career.  At O'Bryant he led the team to three straight Boston City League South titles and was named a City League All-Star in both his junior and senior seasons.  This year at Brimmer and May he led the team in scoring, assists, and steals.

Banegas ran with Expressions Elite on last summer's travel circuit and saw his stock rise quickly in the first week of the live period before going down with an ankle injury.

This year the six-foot-guard saw a wide range of recruitment including a steady dose of suitors from the Atlantic Ten.  He becomes the fourth player to join Northeastern's 2011 class joining six-foot-seven small forward Quincy Ford, six-foot-seven power forward Reggie Spencer, and six-foot-two shooting guard Demetrius Pollard.
