BABC Goes 2-2 at EYBL Session I

The BABC began their defense of the 2011 Nike EYBL championship this weekend in Minnesota at session I of the 2012 Elite Youth Basketball League.

The defending champs were thrown right into the fire with opening match-ups against two of the pre-season favorites in the league, Oakland Soldiers and Mac Irvin Fire.

Their opener saw a heartbreaking 59-58 loss to the Soldiers on Friday night, but the game wasn’t without its bright spots as Jaylen Brantley, Rene Castro, and Wayne Selden were all noted by Scout.com’s recap from Scott Phillips and BABC proved they could play with anyone in this year’s field, leading by as many as 14 in the first half.  Castro led the way with 15 points on 7-10 shooting from the floor and also contributed 5 assists while Selden put up 15 points in just 17 minutes in his first performance back from February’s ankle injury.

BABC was back on the court the next morning taking on Mac Irvin Fire from Chicago and the nation’s top ranked recruit, Jabari Parker.  Castro again led the way with a highly efficient performance, scoring 17 points on 4-8 shooting from the floor, going 3-3 from behind the arc, and 6-6 from the charity stripe.  Selden chipped in with 16 while Brantley went 5-7 from downtown for 15 points and Andrew Chrabascz provided a fourth double figure scorer with 11 points and 7 rebounds.  BABC took the game with by a 66-59 margin, claiming the statement win over one of the nation’s most talented teams.

BABC closed their weekend with a Saturday evening loss to ICP Elite and a Sunday morning win over Nike Team Florida 59-52.  Castro put up 25 points against ICP, going 11-15 from the floor, while Brantley and Selden led BABC on Sunday with 16 points each.

Castro finished the weekend scoring in double figures in all four games and averaging just under 18 points per game while shooting 62% from the floor, 83% from the three-point line, and 90% from the free-throw line.

The Nike EYBL season will continue next weekend in Virginia with session II at the Boo Williams Sports Complex.
