Aranguren Chooses FDU
Springfield Commonwealth Academy & New York Jayhawks guard Jean Aranguren announced his commitment over the weekend to Fairleigh Dickinson.
Before coming to New England, Aranguren a native of Venezuela, played at Upper Room Christian School in New York. He had a standout season last year playing in the AAA Power 5 Conference. Aranguren’s impressive play led to him earning 1st Team All-Conference Honors.
His first and only year in New England has been successful. Aranguren has led an SCA team who has won 14 of their last 16 games. He has had numerous games over 30 points while also earning 1st Team All-Tournament honors at the recent Relentless Hoops Military Circuit event.
On the AAU circuit, Aranguren earned an opportunity to compete for the New York Jayhawks. They played in the Adidas 3SSB League.
“Jean’s story is amazing,” said SCA head coach Joan Sanchez. “He came to us at Upper Room as a freshman and a month and a half in lost his dad. From there, he was part of a team that won back to back Power 5 AA Championships. Jean is a tireless worker and leader. His relentless on-ball defense characterizes who he is as a player.”
“Coach Anderson’s philosophy of high intense pressure defense and fast paced offense fits him so well. Off the court, Jean had a 3.4 GPA and has excelled in community service helping our nonprofit Ensueno Hoops. A joy to coach and a program kid who will empower the culture at FDU. Jean is a true success story, I am extremely proud of him.”
“Jean is a phenomenal two-way player who excels at both guard spots,” said New York Jayhawks head coach Jay David. “His defensive prowess may allow him to at some point be the NEC’s best player on that end. Jean’s poise, leadership, and character will carry him far not just in basketball, but in life.”
Aranguren becomes the first member of SCA’s 2023 class who has finalized their plans to play Division One college basketball next season.
