Andre McFarland Headed to Colorado State

Andre McFarland, a 6’6 postgraduate forward from Brewster Academy, committed to Colorado State University earlier this week.  The commitment ends what has been a tedious few years in the recruiting process for the Las Vegas native.

It was more then two years ago when McFarland thought that he would be able to avoid all of this as he committed to USC following the end of his junior season at Durango High School in Nevada.  But that pledge didn’t hold up for very long as he had already opened things back up a few months later as he returned to school in September to start his senior season.  A year later he was still looking for a home having arrived in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire as a post-graduate member of the Brewster Academy team.  After a bidding war that included a hard push from Iowa State, McFarland singed with the University of Idaho this fall.

As reported first by Jeff Goodman of scout.com, a big reason for McFarland’s commitment to Idaho was due to assistant coach Demarlo Slocum.  Following the season when Slocum left the university, McFarland asked for, and received, his release.  When Slocum landed at Colorado State University it was obvious that the Rams would have a good chance to land the talented forward, and in the end that is exactly what happened as CSU beat out Creighton to sign the best prospect left on the board in New England.

And when you consider the fact that this is a player who has been coveted by programs like USC, Iowa St, Indiana, Michigan, and Nevada in the past, you can see what a major addition he will be to the Rams’ program.  On the offensive end of the floor McFarland uses his terrific physical strength to overpower defenders and plow his way to the basket where he can outmuscle just about any would-be-shot-blocker to finish.  But what is most impressive is that he has developed into a well rounded player who now possesses a consistent threat from the three-point line as well as the versatility to guard multiple positions on the defensive end of the floor.  Given those credentials you can expect first year head coach Tim Miles to make McFarland a focal point of his team’s plans as soon as he sets foot on campus.
