Vermont Gets Commitment
Brian Voelkel, a six-foot-six combo-forward from Iona Prep (NY), gave a verbal commitment to the University of Vermont and head coach Mike Lonergan on Tuesday.
Voelkel, who starred with the Westchester Hawks on the AAU circuit, is considered to be an impact player for the Catamounts and is best known for his high basketball I.Q. and tremendous passing ability, which should make him an especially good fit in Coach Lonergan's system.
Our friends over at Gotham Hoops provided the following scouting report on Voelkel’s game:
Voelkel is a 6 foot 5 player that really understands the game of basketball. With his father being a coach, I guess he didn’t really have a choice. All jokes aside though, Voelkel is a dangerous player, and here is why.
Voelkel has an impressive motor, and like his teammate Jordon Bronner, he understands time and score exceptionally well. Voelkel is constantly on the attack on the offensive end, helping to keep the defense on its heels. Not only does he attack well, but he is even better at hitting open players while he is attacking the rim. This helps his team to get easy looks often, which is always a great thing.
Brian is a small forward in high school, but at the next level I expect him to be used in many ways. Since he will probably end up at a mid-major school I think that he will be effective on defense, especially annoying 2-guards with his combination of strength and quickness.
At the next level I look forward to Voelkel helping whatever team he is on to win while he is at school. I believe he will come into a mid-major school and impact the team with his versatility and basketball IQ right off the bat. – Sept. 15th – J.B.
