Unsigned Senior Spotlight - Nic Button

There are shooters and then there are SHOOTERS.

Nic Button is the latter...and a college ready shooter at that.

He's virtually automatic when in rhythm and capable of getting hot at any time as he showed when he exploded for 10-threes and 41-points earlier this season against South Kent (highlights of that game are below).

The upstate New York native came to the New England prep ranks as a virtual unknown, but finished his season as one of the biggest reasons why Cheshire Academy had the most notable turnaround in all of Class AA this season.

Personal Statement

What I want coaches to know about my game is that the team, my teammates, and winning are everything to me, and I will always put that before myself if it means getting the win. I don’t care who makes the highlight play, and I’m always happy for my teammates when they hit a shot or make a big play. Winning is all I care about because I’m a competitor first before anything, and I can contribute to winning in more ways than just catch and shoot shooting. I’m a combo guard who can play on or off the ball, and I believe coaches will notice from the film that I’m not a one-dimensional player. I have a versatile offensive skill-set with my ability to create space for shots, make plays off the pick n’ roll, and find open teammates. What I think is unique about my play-style is that, even when I’m not scoring, I’m affecting the game with my ability to space the floor, which I believe is one of the reasons I had one of the highest plus/minus on my team this year. I’m a hard worker and gym rat, and I love spending each and every day improving my game and getting better individually and as a team. My lifelong goal has always been to compete at the division 1 level, and competing in the Nepsac AA this year has given me tons of experience against that level of competition.

Recommendation

"Nic is a high level shooter and scorer.  He is a great 3pt shooter and had 10 3s in a league game this year.  He can handle the ball to create his own shot or set up other guys.  Nic is an underrated athlete and on ball defender.  He was our leading scorer on a NEPSAC AA playoff team.  Nic is a high charater person who LOVES to be in the gym working on his game!"
- Jim McCarthy, Cheshire Academy Head Coach & longtime D1 Assistant Coach

Scout's Take

"Button is one of those guys who might be a better college prospect than he is a high school player. What I mean by that is that he's not necessarily the guy who is going to go out and get you 30, although he showed he was capable of that this year, but virtually everything he does translates to the next level. His offensive niche, being an A level shooter, is probably even more valuable at the next level and gives him a clear niche. He is already efficient offensively in terms of maximizing his touches and dribbles so that he doesn't need to always have the ball in his hands to impact the game. Defensively, he's shown he can defend his position against quality competition. When you add all that to the character and intangibles, he's someone who I think proved himself to be a scholarship level prospect this year."
