Unsigned Senior Spotlight - Evan Gutowski

After a strong senior season at Trumbull High School, which culminated with a run to the semifinals of the D1 state tournament, Evan Gutowski opted for a post-graduate season.

When he first arrived at St. Andrew's in August, he looked as if he might be on the outside looking in at scholarship opportunities.

But in the seven months since, Gutowski has exceeded all expectations, by first getting himself in the best shape of his career and then being a virtual walking double-double for the Saints this season while continuing to expand his offensive versatility.

Recommendations

"Evan is a pleasure to coach as he always brings his best effort. Evan has that rare ability to play with his back to the basket as well as hit that pick and pop jumper. He is athletic and can run the floor and loves to play a physical brand of basketball. Evan is a leader and a winner. His flexibility to play inside and out makes him unique. More than anything, his coach-ability and work ethic make him easy to coach!"
- Dave Taylor, Director, DTX Elite

"Evan arrived on campus as a postgrad with huge upside. He worked during the spring and summer to get into outstanding physical shape and was ready to go in the sall from the start. He followed up a terrific summer season with a tremendous 9 week preseason with us. He hit the weight room hard at 6am each morning while getting better in our individual instruction times as well as open gym opportunities. Evan expanded his range and became a reliable 3pt shooter especially coming off a down screen. With the deep team we had this year, Evan still averaged just over 9 points and 11 rebounds per game. We could rely on his overall hustle and positive attitude in times of need as Evan produced hugely at crunch time in each game. He is an outstanding student and is no maintenance for a coaching staff as he wants to continuously get better. Evan has an enormous upside and some college coaches have noticed as he has drawn an offer from D2 Dominican. He’d be a great pickup for a D2 program looking for a guy who can bang inside and finish at the basket while pulling an opposing big man out to the perimeter due to his reliable 3pt shooting."

Scouting Report

What makes Gutowski unique is that while he's developed the shooting range to be able to stretch the floor, he's not one of these face-up bigs that doesn't like contact or avoids the paint. To the contrary, he's naturally strong and plays with a rugged mentality. He has a great nose for the ball coming off the glass, willing to rebound outside his area, and do the dirty work inside. The fact that he can also pull opposing rim protectors away from the paint or score with his back to the basket, only adds to his versatility. The fact that his coaches rave about him across the board only adds to the fact that he's continued to take his game to new levels.
