Super 16 Showcase - Afternoon Recap

The Super 16 continues to roll on with players bringing their games to new heights in front of jammed sidelines of college coaches eager to see who’s ready to solidify their stocks or surprise as intriguing, take-notice prospects.

NJABC 62 Maine Mac 60 in a back-and-forth, tight contest that went down to the last possession with Maine Mac’s valiant pursuit of evening the score coming up one possession short.  Smooth scoring wing Eric Fanning led the way with 16 points for NJABC, with Tristan Thomas finishing with a game-high 23 in a losing effort.

CT Select 67 The Nation 48 in an up-and-down game where CT Select’s pressure really bothered The Nation.  Rohan Brown’s (15 points) defense on The Nation’s do-it-all forward Alex Furness was a major impact.

CT Select 16U 69 Sportsfest Achievers 59 highlighted by a dominant performance by CT Select’s Bryan Jones, who exploded for a game-high 25 points.

CBC 67 Sportsfest Achievers 57 in a contest fueled by the 16-point effort of Timajh Parker-Rivera and  some of CBC younger players such as electric scoring point Khalil Dukes.

Prodigy Basketball 34 Team Jersey Elite 32 OT in a hard-fought defensive battle in which the Taylor brothers made big plays down the stretch to capture victory for Prodigy.

East Coast Elite (DE) 71 Boston Warriors 66 with Isaac Fleming posting 19 points in the win for East Coast.

Mass Rivals 68 Jersey Elite 58 in a game led early by the floor game of Dimitri Floras, who found people around the basket, scored opportunistically, and created open looks for the likes of Steve Haladyna and Ryan Hartung.

East Coast Elite (CT) 67 Metro Boston 54 despite an impressive 20 point performance by Dimitry Coronel, Metro Boston fell to a balanced East Coast Elite attack.

Raising Champions 41 Bay State Magic 36 in another low-scoring affair eventually won by the defensive-minded Raising Champions squad.

USAD 65 Rhode Island Hawks 2013 Red 64 as the Hawks sharpshooting almost led them to a last minute comeback but USAD's Sam Adler and Shyquin Dix were too tough with a combined 8 three-pointers. 

Rhode Island Hawks 2013 Black 53 Prodigy 41 as the Hawks opened with a big first win behind Max Motroni and Harrison Taggart.  Motronti went 5-6 from downtown while Taggart had a strong 8 point second half, and his one on one scoring down the stretch silenced Prodigy’s comeback attempts.

Rhode Island Hawks 2013 Red held off Mid-Atlantic Select in a nail-biter as Sam Fradin made two free-throws with 1.7 seconds remaining on the clock.  The Hawks were led by Tom Hunt's 18 pints and four three-pointers while Jaylen Myrie had a strong game for Select, posting a 14 point performance on several hard to finish conversions. 

Bomb Squad 63 Aim High 56 as the boys from Boston beat a more talented Aim High team 63- 56 which featured the likes of Kuran Iverson, James Jennings, Jamill Powell, and Billy McDonald. Kyle Lawyer led the way with a 22 point effort, and completely hounded Aim High on the boards and the defensive end.

CBC held off Expressions 60 to 53 in a hard fought out game. Quincey McKnight and Andre Anderson led the way for CBC, with a mid-range and long-range game that complemented each other nicely.

Top Performers

Tristan Thomas (Maine Mac)- Thomas continued his impressive play from the morning session by hitting multiple catch-and-shoot threes against an athletic NJABC club and doing a terrific job facilitating offense for others when defenders started to pay more attention to his textbook stroke from distance.

Eric Fanning (NJABC)- One of the hottest low-major commodities currently checked on the offer sheets of Northeast programs in attendance, Fanning has done nothing but solidify his stock as a smooth, solid court presence capable of putting up numbers in a hurry with a silky perimeter jumper and the ability to get to the rim against a variety of defenders with his creativity and size off the dribble.

Liam Langas (The Nation)- Langas is known for his ball-handling ability and toughness, but today he exhibited a much-improved three-point stroke, knocking down four triples.

Rohan Brown (CT Select)- Brown showed his lock-down capabilities as he held The Nation’s star Alex Furness to only 11 points. His length and athleticism frustrated Furness, as he pressured him effectively 94 feet. Brown also converted off of several The Nation turnovers, tallying a team-high 15 points.

Trevon Seymour (CT Select)- Seymour demonstrated a silky-smooth stroke from deep, knocking down four threes, including two pull-up treys in transition.

Bryan Jones (CT Select 16U)- Jones was virtually unstoppable, netting 25 points in his team’s wire-to-wire victory over the Sportsfest Achievers.

Jeanlee Baez (Sportsfest Achievers)- An impressive prospect in the class of 2014, the six-foot-six, bouncy forward attacked the rim with conviction from the high-post area and showed natural playmaking ability as an effective passer when defenders slid up the lane to honor his free-throw line jumper.

Ethan ODay (CBC)- One of the few offensive bright spots in the first half for a CBC club coming off a hard-fought win in the finals of the Hall of Fame Invite on Tuesday, ODay showed his versatile skill-set at six-foot-eight, defining the term hybrid four with his ability to step and shoot it as well as score with toughness at the rim.

Kris Dunn (CBC)- Ever-smooth with the ball in hand, Dunn impressed this afternoon with his rapidly-developing ability to knock down an on-a-dime pull-up over in front of help after turning the corner on a high or side ball-screen.

Kahlil Dukes (CBC)- Already being suited by a plethora of low-majors with the reputation of a big-time scorer out of Capital Prep, the undersized guard caught a rhythm  in the second half against Sportsfest Achievers, knocking down a pair of pure threes from the wing and then showing his value as a mature scorer by attacking a close-out and utilizing a tear-drop floater over an outstretched hand.

Timajh Parker-Rivera (CBC)- Following up an outstanding performance at Elite 75 with a solid showing at the Hall of Fame Invite, Parker-Rivera looks the part of a high-major small-forward with his size, length, and athleticism at six-foot-eight, and continues to show signs of developing perimeter skills to go with his elite finishing ability around the rim.

Dana Raysor (New Jersey Elite)- The St. Patrick’s-product was one of few offensive bright spots early for Jersey Elite, drilling a pair of catch-and-shoot threes in rhythm and elevating to finish high on the square for a plus-one finish in transition.

Dimitri Floras (Rivals)- Following a sensational performance in the Rivals’ run to the title in the Elite Division of the Hall of Fame Invite on Tuesday, the five-ten, super-smooth lead guard was making plays right from the start against Jersey Elite in the afternoon session, drawing multiple defenders at the second level and putting the ball on the money for kick-out threes and look-away dump-downs.

Steve Haladyna (Rivals)- A knock down three-point shooter who spaces himself well off dribble penetration to create room for his quick release, Haladyna made Jersey Elite pay for leaving him alone at the arc and even showed a one-dribble pull-up to his left in the elbow area.

Cedric Kuakumensah (Rivals)- The bruising, big-bodied big continues his strong play throughout July and looks more and more like a would-be steal for a low-major program looking for a strong defensive presence on the interior and someone who can out-run opposing bigs for dunks in transition.

Kachi Nzerem (Boston Warriors)- Nzerem was certainly a bright spot for the Warriors in their loss to East Coast Elite. The bouncy athlete showed off a good perimeter stroke and an exceptional ability to finish at the rim en route to 23 points.

Isaac Fleming (East Coast Elite DE)- The strong guard has great handle and poise enabling him to get into the paint at will and score on a variety of floaters and pull-ups.

Jacquil Taylor and Maurice Taylor (Prodigy Basketball)- While the talented duo of brothers was stymied most of the game by Team Jersey’s zone, they were able to make huge plays in crunch time. Jacquil made a left-handed push shot in the lane with 5 seconds left to tie the game, and Maurice had the go-ahead put-back finish in overtime. The talent and potential of these two is undeniable.

Dimitry Coronel (Metro Boston)- The wing athlete made a plethora of pull-up jumpers, as well as some terrific finishes in traffic. Coronel’s mid-range game has become a valuable asset for him to complement his high-level athleticism.

Nate Howard (East Coast Elite CT)- Six-foot-ten and long, Howard was a great finisher around the rim against Metro Boston. He kept the ball high, was active on the glass, and was disruptive on the defensive end.

Darren Payen (East Coast Elite CT)- Payen is a smooth combo forward who will only get better as he puts on more muscle. He was a huge part of East Coast Elite’s afternoon win over Metro Boston.

Marques Underwood (Raising Champions)- An athletic four-man out of the Bronx, Underwood dominated this low-scoring game, taking control in the second half with his work around the rim and on the offensive glass.

Jeff Racy (CBC Donnelly) had his second impressive game of the day, continuing to prove his prowess from the three-point line in addition to a sound feel for the game.
