STM Guard Commits to Iona

St. Thomas More’s post-graduate A.J. English went under-recruited all season long.

A guard with good size and length, English is a shot-maker who also owns complimenting versatility to handle the ball, make decisions, and get to the basket.

Iona jumped into English’s recruitment late but reportedly saw him play incredibly well in an open gym two weeks ago and then brought him to their New Rochelle campus this weekend, taking advantage of the new division I try-out rule which permits schools to watch perspective student athletes play during their visits.  English reportedly played very well again, convincing Iona to pull the trigger and extend the scholarship offer.

English is, in many ways, reminiscent of current Iona guard Sean Armand, another shot-maker who went under-recruited coming out of his prep school career but has proven to be the ideal fit in head coach Tim Cluess’ up-tempo offensive system, which led all of division I basketball in points scored this season en route to an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament.

English becomes the second St. Thomas More player to commit in the last ten days, joining Rodney Sanders who committed to Southern New Hampshire late last week.
