Simmons Sets Sights on Gardner-Webb
Putnam Science Academy & Expressions Elite guard Darryl Simmons announced his commitment to Gardner-Webb on Friday afternoon.
Simmons quickly made a name for himself in New England with his performances at the 2018 and 2019 Elite 75 Frosh/Soph Camps. He was also a part of PSA’s 2020 National Prep Championship squad.
When current Miami guard Bensley Joseph went down to injury in the 2020-21 season, Simmons was thrust with more opportunity. He took advantage of it, averaging 12.1 points, 4.4 assists, and 1.7 steals for a team that went 18-3.
A decision was made before the next academic year for Simmons to reclassify into 2023. His last two seasons at PSA were one to remember. He was one of the main playmakers for Mustangs teams who won back to back AAA Power 5 Conference and National Prep Championship titles.
Simmons competed on the Nike EYBL circuit for Expressions Elite during his 16U and 17U seasons. He was part of a pair of teams that qualified for the Peach Jam.
“This one is special for me,” said PSA head coach Tom Espinosa. “Darryl has been here for six years and is like a son to me. He deserves it more than any kid that I have ever been involved with.
“Darryl has run the show for us for three straight years, played on three national championship teams, and was part of the school in 2018 when we won our first one. He has seen all four National Prep Championship titles.”
“You talk about Daryl, the words that come out or you think about are winner, leader, gamer, and champion. He will have a phenomenal career in the Big South Conference.”
Simmons becomes the sixth member of PSA’s 2023 class who will be playing Division One college basketball next season.
