NERR-TV Virtual Frosh/Soph Showcase - Mike Gitz

Mike Gitz' career is already off to a fast start as he put up big numbers during his freshman campaign at St. John the Baptist in Long Island.

But following the coach's resignation, he's now back at Commack High School following an abreviated, but no less successful summer.

He attended session 3 of the Hoop Group Academic Elite Camp and came away with a clean sweep of the awards. He was selected as an All-Star, won the All-Star Game Most Valuable Player award, and was then named the Most Outstanding Player of the Camp.

Here's more on a talented up-and-coming guard from Long Island.

Recommendations

"Mike Gitz is the best shooter I've seen on Long Island in a very long time. Perfect mechanics partnered with a very quick release make this '23 deadly from anywhere on the court  With continued strength and conditioning training and a 6'1" frame, Mike has developed into the full package. I equate Mike's long range shooting precision to a baseball hitter that doesn't slump. His consistency is probably his greatest attribute. He also has that rare ability to finish around and at the rim. Shooting off of either leg, flip shots, fades, are all in his toolbox. His ability to see the floor and distribute the basketball has also become a huge part of his game. His handle and court vision has improved every year with the work he puts in. Mike's greatest concentration over the last 2 years has been his defensive play. Mike has worked hard on his man-to-man defense, being physical, and using his speed to cut down angles. Becoming a fundamentally sound defensive player along with his offensive arsenal has pushed him into an elite caliber. Watch his game film for 2 minutes and you'll see the fireworks. Very coachable smart kid, 'A' average, who works hard every day to make him and his team better."
- Joe Toner, Director, Nassau Pride AAU

"Mike Gitz is a natural scorer and has such a quick release - he is hard working athlete and it shows in his game. He has very smooth stroke from beyond the arc and if defended he can take it to the basket. His defense, ball handling, speed, and rebounding has improved tremendously over the last year and is becoming an all around solid player. It has been a pleasure coaching this young man."
- Joe Falabella, Assistant Coach, Nassau Pride AAU

Scouting Report

Gitz is a high-level shot-maker with a virtually pure release. You aren't going to find many more underclassmen who can shoot the ball like he can. He not just knocks down spot-up threes but can also make them on the move or off the dribble. He uses the threat of his jumper to open up the rest of his game and also shown flashes of being an advanced passer as well, making advanced reads off the dribble and ball-screens. Similarly, he shows potential as a crafty finisher inside the paint as well, utilizing floaters and compensating for his lack of sheer size and explosiveness with clever lay-up making ability.
