He graduated from Brooke Point High School in Stafford, Virginia where he played two years of varsity basketball and was voted team captain in both seasons.

Purnell was awarded First Team All-District and All-Conference in his county as a senior, which led to interest from Air Force and a few D3 schools.

However, he hasn't had the chance to prove himself since arriving in New England because of the pandemic, and is eager to prove his talent and skill-level.

Personal Statement

Due to COVID 19 causing delays with our season, it has been difficult putting together game footage that accurately showcases my talent and current skill level. However, I have maintained my unwavering determination and fully taken advantage of the absence of social distractions by dedicating this time to personal growth and development. Although there is always room for growth, I am confident in my abilities and given the opportunity I can be an asset to a D1 or D2 program. I am a hard worker on and off the court. I pride myself in being an all around player. I study the game when I'm not playing and train whenever possible.

Recommendations

"Xavier is a player who truly demonstrates knowledge of and passion for the game. He knows the price of success. During time with our team, he battled through injury and adversity, all the time trusting the process of hard work. Coaches and teammates view him as an example of a great teammate and even better human being. "
- Eddie Samko, Head Coach, Brook Point High School

"It is my privilege to write this recommendation for Xavier Purnell. I have been fortunate to coach Xavier. In all of my dealings with Xavier he has shown to be a young man of character, intelligence, and talent."
- Marcus Clay, Varsity Basketball Coach, Brooke Point High School

"Xavier is an athletic, skilled and fundamental scoring guard with a high motor and an incredible work ethic. He plays 94 feet, he is an outstanding defender and he is a strong rebounding guard. During my 20+ year coaching career he is one of the top players I have ever coached in terms of character, leadership and discipline. He makes others around him better, he is unselfish and he is a consummate teammate. D1 coaches should take notice!"
- Aaron Patterson, Head Coach, MacDuffie

Scout's Take

First and foremost, when you get a player who gets such rave reviews, across the board, for his character and commitment to hard-work, that player is almost always going to make a significant and positive contribution to a college program's culture. Many times though, the character and basketball-specific talent aren't on the same level. With Purnell, that doesn't appear to be the case. He has versatile tools including good size, athleticism off 2 feet, the ability to shoot off the dribble, a willingness to share the ability, and clear potential on both ends of the floor. He is a player that we are looking forward to seeing in person, and college coaches should feel the same way.
