NERR Mourns the Passing of Kevin Wiercinski
Longtime Lawrence Academy Men's Basketball Coach Kevin Wiercinski tragically passed away on August 14, 2025, after a courageous battle with cancer.
As a coach, Wiercinski put together a remarkable career with more than 400 career victories to his name. He won multiple NEPSAC titles in his tenure at the head of the Lawrence Academy program and helped develop two future NBA players in Shabazz Napier and Antoine Wright.
The 2010 season, led by Napier, is one for the books as the Spartans went 29–0, and won the New England Prep Class C title over St. Mark's.
In nine years during the early 2000s, LA had appeared in the finals seven out of the past nine years, ultimately winning NEPSAC titles in 2002, 2007, and 2010.
While his coaching resume is definitely impressive, it was the impact he made as a person that resonated most deeply with everyone he touched. He was known for his kindness, generosity, and ability to connect with people from all walks of life.
Beyond the basketball court, he served as Chair of the History Department at Lawrence Academy, while taking on numerous other roles over his years on campus: “Even as the undisputed leader of the basketball program, Kevin had the confidence and grace to play whatever role the school needed —he could be the best head varsity coach of another sport (Boys’ Soccer in his early days, then Golf), best assistant coach, best fill-in coach or best minibus driver in the league when the situation asked for it. Whatever the school and the students needed.”
The New England basketball community continues to mourn this profound loss, and the NERR Staff sends our condolences to the Wiercinski family during this difficult time.
