Murphy to Duke in 2011

For the second time this year one of New England’s top prospects in the class of 2012 is leaving school a year early.

St. Mark’s forward Alex Murphy will head to Duke in the class of 2011.

From the time that the star forward made his initial commitment in February, he never denied this was a possibility.

“When the spring approaches I’ll sit down with my family and discuss the 2011 option,” he said at the time.

True to his word, Murphy finished out the season, leading St. Mark’s to the NEPSAC AA final and only recently made the final decision to enroll early at Duke.

“It was a very difficult decision but in the end I just thought this was the best thing for my future,” Murphy said.  “It’s a great opportunity.”

The Rhode Island native will go down as one of the top prospects to come out of the New England region in recent years.  A versatile six-foot-nine athlete who can play multiple positions on the floor, Murphy developed a reputation for being able to raise the level of his game when the stakes were the highest.

Now he will take his game to the mecca of college basketball, Duke’s Cameroon Indoor Stadium, where he will join a 2011 recruiting class that includes Austin Rivers, Michael Gbinjie, Marshall Plumlee, and Quinn Cook.
