McCoy Picks Drexel

Early in the week it was being reported on numerous recruiting sites that Daryl McCoy had committed to Drexel University.  That information was, at the time, pre-mature as McCoy didn’t officially make his decision until Thursday afternoon.

The Hartford native becomes the second New England big man to land in Bruiser Flint’s recruiting class, joining Dartaye Ruffin from Massachusetts.  In McCoy’s case, Flint is landing a center with a potential huge upside.

Potential has always been the key word for McCoy.  It was just a few years back, that some national recruiting analysts were calling him a high-major prospect, even before he had ever played a single high school game.  Built with the natural size and strength of a linebacker, along with the skills to handle, pass, and shoot the ball from the perimeter, he clearly possessed all the tools to be a star.

In the three years since, McCoy has showed flashes at times, but has never been able to put it all together on a consistent basis.  His stock was never higher than last spring when he thrived playing with his Connecticut Basketball Club AAU team, generating interest from a wide variety of high-major programs.

As recently as this summer, it looked as if McCoy might be headed to the Atlantic 10.  But give Flint and his staff credit, as they worked their way back into the picture, and ultimately earned a commitment from the CIAC’s most promising big man.

Now, if they can get him to reach his potential over the next four years, they’ll have one of the best big men in the CAA.
