McCoy Has Leader
Daryl McCoy wasn’t a very popular name among college coaches until last spring when he shined with the Connecticut Basketball Club at the Pittsburgh and Providence Jam Fests. His combination of size and skill intrigued coaches at the highest levels as schools including Marquette, Kentucky, and Providence all expressed interest in further evaluating his potential.
Another school that began recruiting McCoy after the April live period was the University of Rhode Island. They stayed with him this summer despite some inconsistent performances. Now their perseverance appears likely to pay off as they have emerged as the clear leader to land McCoy’s services with schools like St. Bonaventure, Marist, and Rider also giving chase.
McCoy is a high risk/high reward type of prospect. On one hand he has struggled in the past to maintain consistent levels of effort and intensity. But on the other hand, he has a rare combination of power and skill that simply can’t be taught.
At 6’9”, McCoy is built like a linebacker. He has a massive upper body that gives him the physical potential to be a beast in the paint. But he also has a skill set that allows him to handle and pass the ball along the perimeter and make open shots to 18 feet.
With such undeniable talent only two questions remain – Is McCoy ready to put in the work it will take to reach his tremendous potential and which school will have the opportunity to coach that talent out of him.
One of those questions could be answered soon. We’ll have to wait and see for the other.
