Mayo Makes Call

Messalonskee (ME) big man Nicholas Mayo made a verbal commitment to Eastern Kentucky this weekend following his official visit.

It’s an ironic landing spot for Mayo, who played perhaps the best basketball of his career in the state of Kentucky this summer, starring for the Maine Athletic Club through both the Eddie Ford Hoopfest as well as AAU Nationals, where the team finished 11th overall.

Mayo averaged over 20 points per game through 13 games in MAC’s trip to Kentucky, scoring in double figures in all but one according to MBR.org, and earning a variety of division I scholarship offers in the process.

A six-foot-seven big man with a naturally strong frame and a soft touch that extends out to the three-point line, Mayo got his first taste of high level competition during the recent AAU season and so in many ways he’s still raw and just scratching the surface of his potential.

His frame is built to add a good deal of muscle once he gets into a college weight program and his skill set bound to continue expanding as he adds polish to his game.

Mayo is the first player from the Maine public school system to commit to a division I program in the last two years and only the second in the last three years behind Garet Beal, who committed to the University of Maine in the class of 2013.
