Lucas Croteau Earns Scholarship
Lucas Croteau wasn’t a name many people had heard outside of New Hampshire before this summer. Certainly no player on the New York Gauchos AAU team was aware of him before they locked up with his New Hampshire Playerz squad at the Rumble in the Bronx Tournament. But you can bet they all remember him after Croteau went for a tournament high 50 points.
“I think that the Rumble in the Bronx really helped my recruiting go to the next level. It was a great game but that is how I’ve been playing all along. I think doing it against a top team in the country let everyone know that ‘hey this kid can really play’,” said Croteau.
With another outstanding performance coming in July at the National Invitational Tournament, Southern New Hampshire must have felt the urgency to get the local star locked up before other scholarship offers came rolling in.
“Coach Spirou said that he’s not recruiting me to sit on the bench and get a role two or three years down the road. He said he’s not promising a starting spot but he is bringing me in to play,” Croteau said.
But it wasn’t just the head coach who Croteau felt a quick bond with but his future teammates as well.
“The first time I walked in to play with the players everyone accepted me as one of them,” he told the New England Recruiting Report. “Chris Brickley seemed to already take me under his wing and give me little tips and help me with the mental aspect of the next level as well, which I greatly appreciate since I will be filling into his spot after he leaves. So I’m hoping as a freshman I can have him as my mentor and he can help me with a lot of things on and off the court.”
Before arriving at Southern New Hampshire, Croteau will finish out his career at Spalding High School. Expectations are high going into his senior year as he may well be the best overall public school player in the state of New Hampshire.
