Hatchett Commits to Fairfield
The journey from Western Michigan to the National Prep stage is not one many players take, but Jah Hatchett’s path has been built on patience and a willingness to take risks for his future.
The 5-foot-11 point guard from Kentwood, Michigan, recently announced his commitment to Fairfield University at the start of the month and is ready to bring his playmaking and toughness to the MAAC.
Hatchett began his high school career at East Kentwood High School, where he played against some of Michigan’s top competition.
Despite consistent production, his recruitment remained quieter than expected. Instead of waiting for opportunities to come his way, Hatchett decided to forge his own path.
Following his junior season, he reclassified into the 2026 class and transferred to Putnam Science Academy in Connecticut.
This decision meant leaving home and stepping into an environment filled with Division I caliber athletes where every practice and every game is a test. For Hatchett, it was the ultimate proving ground.
On a team full of Division 1 prospects, Hatchett showed himself to be a reliable piece of the winning formula that Coach Espinosa’s program is known for as he was an integral piece to their fifth National Prep Championship victory.
Playing the point guard position, he proved that he could run a team at the highest level of prep school basketball.
While his prep career elevated his game and exposure, he remained connected to his roots, competing on the Under Armour circuit with Grand Rapids Storm.
The summers have added another layer to his development, allowing him to showcase his ability against elite competition from across the country while still representing his hometown program.
Fairfield University saw that growth and offered Hatchett a spot on their roster, providing him the Division I opportunity he had been working toward since his early high school years. His commitment adds a guard with championship experience, proven toughness, and the ability to orchestrate an offense in high-pressure situations.
But before he arrives at Fairfield, Hatchett’s focus remains on Putnam Science Academy and winning another national championship.
With another talented roster returning, the Mustangs are in position to chase back-to-back national titles, and Hatchett has the chance to play a big part in that.
His story is one of perseverance. From a promising start at East Kentwood and through the uncertainty of the recruiting process, to the leap of faith at Putnam, and finally the commitment to Fairfield and the Division 1 level.
Fairfield is getting a guard who has proven that no challenge is too big and has played with and against players ready to play at any collegiate level.
