Giovacchini Wins Sullivan Award
Lawrence Academy's Dan Giovacchini was recently named the winner of the High School Sullivan Award.
The High School Sullivan Award stems from the prestigious AAU Sullivan Aard, honoring the outstanding amateur athlete in the United States. Presented annually by the AAU since 1930, the award was named after founder and past president of the Amateur Athletic Union James E. Sullivan.
Based on the qualities of leadership, character, sportsmanship, and the ideals of amateurism, the award goes far beyond athletic accomplishments to honor those who have shown strong moral character.
The High School Sullivan award looks to honor a high school student who emboies leadership skills and has given back to their community by participating in some type of athletics.
Giovacchini was selected from four boys finalists and awarded a $10,000 scholarship as a result. He will officially receive the award next week in Orlando as part of the ceremony to kick-off the ESPN Rise games.
In his high school career, Giovacchini earned 12 varsity letters and led undefeated league championship teams in football (running back and linebacker), basketball and baseball. He was team captain in all three sports his senior year and received all-league or higher honors in all three, as well as league MVP in football. Daniel played AAU basketball for six years with the Boston Warriors, winning a state championship and attending six national tournaments. He will attend Brown University in the fall where he’ll play football and basketball.
