Gilpin Accepts Scholarship
Hampden Academy graduate and incoming Bridgton Academy post-graduate Zach Gilpin made a verbal commitment to Bentley earlier this week, accepting a full athletic scholarship in the class of 2015.
Gilpin had a storied career at Hampden and was named the Gatorade Player of the Year in the state of Maine following a senior season in which he averaged 23 points, 10 rebounds, and almost 2 assists and 2 steals per game.
He was also a finalist for the state’s Mr. Basketball Award after leading Hampden to a 21-1 overall record.
Gilpin starred for MB Nation on this year’s AAU circuit and continued to raise the level of his game with each passing month, playing his best basketball of the season during the recent July evaluation period.
The six-foot-five forward traveled south to visit Bentley shortly after the period came to an end, and committed only a few days later.
“My mom and I went down and visit the campus and visited with Coach Lawson, and he seemed like a great guy,” Gilpin told the Bangor Daily News, “and Bentley is known around New England as being a high academic school, so that really excited me.”
Gilpin also saw plenty of familiar faces on Bentley’s Waltham campus. In fact, he becomes the fifth Maine product to commit to the Falcons in the last five years joining Andrew Shaw, Keegan Hyland, Alex Furness, and Tyler McFarland.
He also joins AAU teammate Jayvon Pitts-Young, who earlier this month committed to American International College in the class of 2014, as the second member of the MB Nation’s team to earn a full athletic scholarship.
