Elite 75 Frosh/Soph – Event Recap

The walls were lined at Boston University's Case Gymnasium on Saturday as the gym was jam packed for the third annual New England Elite 75 Showcase – Frosh/Soph Edition.

The event featured many of the best underclassmen prospects in New England as session I included many of the up and coming freshmen and session two showcased the sophomores. 

Among the numerous storylines that emerged during the course of the day were some already well known prospects backing up their reputations while others exploded onto the scene. 

The freshmen saw a wide variety of players impress as Jeremy Miller, Jared Wilson-Frame, Johnnie Vassar, and Levy Gillespie Jr. showed why they were so highly regarded coming out of middle school and others including Aaron Falzon, Jonathan Joseph, and Bonzie Colson proved they would take a back seat to no one. 

Idris Taqee headlined the list of breakout performers and was joined by Matthew Gerak and Quinn Iuliano, two guys who came into the day as virtual unknowns and left having made their mark. 

When the sophomores took to the court in the day’s second session the level of play picked up quite a bit. 

Rene Castro, Andrew Chrabascz, Jake Fay, Jared Terrell, Timmance McKinney, Derek Collins, and Kaleb Joseph were among the most notable sophomores in the field and were joined by some new faces on the prep scene including Dekeeba Battee, Asur Madison, Dennis Green, and Travis Berry. 

Matt Cimino and Ikemefuna Ngwudo are two well known players who have taken their game to the next level since we last watched this summer while others including Bernard Brantley, Adrian Oliveira, and John Powell are also quickly progressing

Thomas Rivard may have had the biggest breakout performance of the afternoon but Douby Maduegbunam and Sam Dowden were not far behind. 

Of all the sophomores who stood out, Noah Vonleh might have been the most impressive.  Not only is the six-foot-seven swingman among the most dominant players in his age bracket but he continues to improve at a rapid rate, constantly adding new dimensions to his game, including a handle that now allows him to break people down or shake his defender.  But what really separates this youngster is the fact that he is still growing into his body, and is still at least a year or two away from maximizing his big time physical potential.  Once he puts it all together the final product could be scary good if he continues to work hard.
