Drummond Changes Mind; Picks UConn in 2011
Even as Hurricane Irene is set to roll into New England, Andre Drummond created a media storm of his own on Friday night with one simple message on his twitter account.
"It's official I'm heading to the university of connecticut to be a husky this year! Do I hear repeat," he tweeted around 7:00p.m.
The news caught every national recruiting outlet off guard to the point where Scout.com's lead national analyst Evan Daniels was the first to respond with an appropriate retweet that began with "Umm...".
From that point on it became a media race to see who could confirm the validity of the tweet. When it became apparent that Drummond indeed did announce a decision of this magnitude via his twitter account it set the recruiting world abuzz over the internet.
Drummond's announcement came little more than two weeks after he told ESPN.com that he would remain in the class of 2012 and join AAU teammate Kris Dunn at Wilbraham and Monson Academy. He also said he wouldn't be making a decision before the spring and that he would choose between Connecticut, Georgetown, Louisville, West Virginia, as well as a potential jump straight to the NBA Draft.
While the surprising decision is certainly tremendous news for UConn and head coach Jim Calhoun, there are still plenty of questions to be answered. See ESPN's analysis for more on that subject.
What is absolutely certain however, is that this is the recruiting victory that Calhoun and Connecticut have been working for since before Drummond exploded on the national scene several years ago. The six-foot-eleven big man is one of the most talented prospects to ever come out of the state of Connecticut and the highest ranked prospect to ever commit to UConn.
