Doherty Makes Pick
Marlborough High School and New England Playaz senior Chris Doherty committed to Notre Dame on Monday night, little more than 48 hours before the end of the early signing period.
Doherty visited Notre Dame's campus earlier this month and left with a scholarship offer from the ACC school. Ten days later and he has now become the fifth player to commit to head coach Mike Brey, adding to a recruiting class that was already among the top three in the country.
His commitment will also reunite him with Playaz' teammate Nate Laszewski who committed to Notre Dame earlier this fall and signing last week.
Doherty is an undersized but rugged and athletic southpaw big man who proved himself against some of the very best post players in the country during Adidas Gauntlet play. He was a critical component of the Playaz' tremendous summer as they advanced to the finals of both the Gauntlet Finale as well as the Summer Championships.
Notre Dame has had tremendous fortune in the state of Massachusetts over the years as Zach Auguste (also from Marlboro), Pat Connaughton, and Bonzie Colson have all become stars under Brey. Colson, who was voted the ACC Pre-Season Player of the Year, will graduate following this season and so Doherty will have an opportunity to contribute for those minutes.
Doherty becomes the 7th member of the Playaz' 2017 class to accept a D1 offer as he joins Laszewski, Lukas Kisunas (UConn), Chuck Hannah (Elon), Tyrese Williams (Quinnipiac), Kai Toews (UNC Wilmington), and Ethan Wright (Princeton).
