Costello Continuing Career at Suffolk
Matt Costello, a senior captain at Bishop Fenwick High School, has committed to playing basketball at Suffolk University for Coach Adam Nelson.
Costello was a four-year varsity player and three year starter for Fenwick. He is a two-time Catholic Central League All-Star and was named The Boston Globe’s “Player of the Week” on four occasions.
The six-foot-three swingman was the leading scorer and rebounder for the Crusaders over the last two seasons, and had 13 double-doubles over this period. Despite being hampered by mid-season injuries this year, he averaged 18.1 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 2 assists per game.
In December, he averaged 25 points over a three-game span and was game MVP at the Beverly holiday tournament. He was then selected game MVP at the Good Sports Invitational held at the TD Garden.
He was the lynchpin to Fenwick’s successful season, which saw the team play in the MIAA state tournament, under Coach John Preziosa’s tutelage, for the first time in five years. He averaged 29 points, 10 rebounds, and 3 steals in back-to-back games late in the season (including a 35-point performance), with Fenwick needing to win both to qualify for the tournament.
He concluded the regular season with 19 against eventual state champ Cardinal Spellman, and 24 against ranked Martha’s Vineyard, before averaging over 20 points and 8 rebounds per game in the state tournament.
Costello was named a regional All Star by both The Salem News and The Lynn Item.
