Bede Picks Virginia Tech
Cushing Academy and Mass Rivals point guard Wabissa Bede announced his verbal commitment to Virginia Tech at a Wednesday afternoon ceremony.
He visited Virginia Tech's campus this weekend after taking his first official visit to Butler in August. Minnesota, LaSalle and UMass were also among his final five although he generated interest and offers from numerous other high profile college programs.
Bede put his name on the national map this summer and specifically in Las Vegas during the final week of the July evaluation period when he led the Rivals to both the Adidas Creator's Cup as well as the Adidas Summer Championship, in a game that was televised live on ESPNU.
Those championships capped an incredible month for the Rivals as they went a combined 22-0 in tournament play including championships at the Adidas Gauntlet Finale and Peach State Invitational earlier in the month.
Bede wasn't always projected for such stardom. In fact, he was anything but a high profile young prospect as a stocky and unexplosive underclassmen at North Andover High School. However, he exceeded all expectations through years of hard work as he built up both his body and skill set to make the player he is today. His value though goes beyond just his strong body, tight handle and good pull-up game. He's a charismatic personality with obvious leadership tools. Both his work ethic and toughness are contagious to those around him and he's equally competitive on the defensive end of the floor.
He becomes the fourth Rivals product in the class of 2017 to commit to a division I school as he joins Makai Ashton-Langford (UConn), Azar Swain (Yale) and Tamenang Choh (Brown).
