BABC Wraps Up EYBL Season

The BABC’s junior team was in North Augusta, South Carolina this week at the Nike Peach Jam, the final session of the 2012 Elite Youth Basketball League Schedule.  BABC qualified for the Peach Jam by finishing the EYBL regular season with an 11-9 record, good for fourth place in Division A.

With both their freshman and sophomore teams competing in AAU Nationals and Super Showcases in Orlando, BABC had just six players see action over the course of their five games at the Peach Jam, but all reports indicate a valiant effort as they battled programs featuring some of the top individual talent in the country.

They opened the tournament with a heartbreaking 54-53 loss to a loaded CIA Bounce team from Canada which features the top overall prospect in the national class of 2014 in Andrew Wiggins as well as two top 40 nationally ranked guards in the class of 2013 in Tyler Ennis and Xavier Rathan Mayes.  Rene Castro led the way with 19 points while Jaylen Brantley and Andrew Chrabascz finished in double figures with 16 and 11 respectively.

It didn’t get any easier later in the day as BABC matched up against Team Texas Titans and Julius Randle, the second ranked prospect in the national class of 2013.  BABC held Randle to only 13 points while their backcourt of Brantley, Castro and Darien Fernandez led the way with a combined 36 points as Brantley and Castro continued to be in double figures and Fernandez provided an offensive spark off the bench.  Kamari Robinson also made a huge contribution with 13 rebounds.

Friday began with BABC scoring a tough win over Wisconsin Playground 62-60.  Castro and Brantley both shot the ball well as Castro connected on 10-14 shots to finish with 23 points while Brantley was 6-13 including 3-6 from the three-point line for 16 points.  Tyrese Hoxter added ten points of his own while Chrabascz ripped down 17 rebounds along with his 11 points.  Castro and Chrabascz would continue to play well later in the day, finishing with 19 and 17 points respectively against Mac Irvin Fire from Chicago.

BABC’s final game of the 2012 EYBL season took place on Saturday morning in a close 67-66 decision to Howard Pulley.  Chrabascz continued to be at his beset with 22 points and 12 rebounds on 10-15 shooting from the floor while Robinson added 12 points and 6 rebounds in the frontcourt.  Castro had arguably his most balanced game with 16 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists.

Elsewhere at the Peach Jam, Team Scan, a New York based Nike squad featuring a variety of New England products, advanced to the semifinals of the sophomore division bracket.  Scan’s roster included Chris McCullough, incoming Marianapolis forward Eric Long and St. Joseph’s swingman Quincey McKnight.
