Assumption Building Frontcourt

Assumption picked up a verbal commitment from Cushing Academy’s post-graduate forward Matt Mareno earlier this week.  He will join Columbia transfer, and NMH alum, Chris Fitzgerald, in the Greyhounds’ incoming recruiting class.

Mareno is an athletic six-foot-six forward who came to Cushing from California, where he played his high school basketball.  He provided the Penguins with a live body around both rims this year and was an important part of their run to the Class AA championship.

While Mareno should be versatile enough to play a couple of different positions in the NE-10, his best asset is his athleticism, which is only magnified by his high motor, allowing him to infuse energy on the game and make momentum changing plays on both ends of the floor.

Fitzgerald is a forward who was best known for his three-point range during his career at NMH.  He’ll have two years of eligibility when he arrives at Assumption and should be capable of making an immediate contribution.

Assumption went 21-8 this season under second year head coach Matt Mahar, advancing to the East Region Semifinals of the Division II NCAA Tournament.
