Akok picks UConn

Putnam Science Academy alum and Mass Rivals product Akok Akok made a verbal commitment to UConn on Saturday during his latest trip to their campus.

Akok, who has been the top ranked prospect in New England's 2019 class for over a year, spent the last two-and-a-half years at Putnam after transferring from Manchester West High School in New Hampshire and played a major role in the Mustang's National Prep Championship last March.

While Akok was labeled a repeat sophomore when he first arrived, he graduated last spring after his 8th semester of high school and returned as a post-graduate this fall. Last week, when he left campus for Thanksgiving break, he announed that he would look to enroll in college at mid-year after taking the December SAT.

Akok took that test Saturday morning and then returned to UConn's campus and announced his commitment.

Akok had previously taken five official visits this fall - to UConn, Pittsburgh, Georgetown, Syracuse, and Providence - but as Yurview New England detailed last week, didn't make a decision in time for November's early signing period and instead expressed interest in declaring for the NBA Draft only to turn in a disappointing performance in front of NBA scouts at the National Prep Showcase, in what ended up being his final game in a PSA jersey.

Akok's talent level though is undeniable as he's long, bouncy, and skilled with ideal characteristics for the modern game given his ability to both protect the rim on the defensive end and stretch the floor with his shooting range. He is the third top 100 national prospect to commit to Connecticut in the class of 2019 as he joins the backcourt tandem of James Bouknight and Jalen Gaffney.

Below are some of his summer highlights with the Rivals.
