Ainge Keeping it in the Family
Following a starring performance this weekend at the Middlesex Magic Fall Classic, Cooper Ainge had another big night on Monday when he made a commitment to Brigham Young University.
Ainge accept a spot on the team as a recruited walk-on with a chance to earn a scholarship down the road according to Middlesex Magic head coach Michael Crotty Jr.
But Ainge is clearly more than your average walk-on.
The son of former NBA player and current President of Basketball Operations for the Boston Celtics, Danny Ainge, Cooper not only comes from good stock but a long family tradition of starring at BYU.
That was enough to warrant an in-home visit from the BYU coaching staff on Monday night, something extraordinarily rare for mid-major division I walk-ons.
Ainge has seen his game improve by leaps and bounds in recent months, and had his talents on full display this weekend, both running the show and scoring a variety of points while demonstrating his lethal outside shooting range.
Given the family history and Cooper’s recent development, it’s entirely possible that he could end up carving out an important niche for himself on a BYU program that has established itself as one of the preeminent mid-major programs in the country.
