A Connecticut Gem Heads South

A few weeks ago, Northwest Catholic and Connecticut Elite wing Ryan Tolliver announced his commitment to Northern Kentucky University.

One of the region’s hidden gems, Tolliver emerged this summer as a standout performer, excelling at the Elite 75 College Showcase and in the Hoop Group Showcase League with his CT Elite squad. He regularly thrived as CT Elite’s primary wing scorer, consistently showcasing his skill set.

After finishing an impressive junior season at Northwest Catholic, Tolliver carried that momentum into the spring. My first look at Tolliver came at the Connecticut Elite Spring Showcase, where I was struck by his size and fluid shooting skills—hallmarks of his game. Later, at the Elite 75, he stood out again, impressing the NERR staff and solidifying his potential as a Division One player.

In late July, Tolliver’s efforts paid off with scholarship offers from Central Connecticut State, Bucknell, and Northern Kentucky, with Tolliver ultimately selecting NKU.

Reflecting on his journey, Tolliver expressed gratitude for those who helped him along the way: “First off, I’d like to thank all my family, friends, and coaches who have supported me throughout this journey and for the sacrifices they have made for me.”

On his decision to choose NKU, Tolliver said, “Many factors went into choosing NKU. The coaching staff showed me a lot of love and made me feel like I was part of a family. I’m also coming into a good usage role, and I’m a big fan of how hard they play.” He added, “I’m excited to join the staff and culture at NKU. Their daily drive and commitment to excellence are exactly what I’m looking for. They’ve done an outstanding job developing players and positioning the program to compete for a conference title each year.”

Unlike many New England Division One prospects, Tolliver opted not to attend a prep school. On that decision, he explained, “I didn’t feel the need to go prep because I’ve made the best of where I’m at now, and it’s a great situation. I have great teammates and coaches who strive to get better every day and want to win it all, just like I do.”

As an under-the-radar prospect from the Connecticut State Association, Tolliver’s exposure at the Elite 75 Showcase was instrumental in putting him on the map for Division One programs. Reflecting on the event, he shared, “In my opinion, the Elite 75 is a great platform because it puts you in front of college coaches who are actively recruiting, connects you with potential prep schools, and offers a chance to be evaluated and broadcasted to a wide range of college programs. I highly recommend it to anyone trying to reach the next level.”

NKU is getting a 6’7” steal in Tolliver, and as he gains experience, his game will only continue to expand.
