Unsigned Senior Spotlight - Giovanni Rubino

Giovanni Rubino arrived in New England for his post-graduate year at Cheshire Academy as a relative unknown.

He was coming off a strong senior season at Pequannock High School in New Jersey but was just beginning to grow into his body and looking to take both his game and his recruitment to the next levels.

That's exactly what he did over the course of the next six months, as Rubino established himself as one of the keys for a Cheshire team that had the biggest turn-around in Class AA this season.

Personal Statement

Previously acknowledged as scholarship talent by NERR, my biggest strength has always been my pace and feel for the game. I believe I am able to handle the ball while always playing at my own pace and not being sped up. I've always been an above average 3 pointer shooter with the ability to assist my teammates. I know my body and weight need work, but with an improved frame, I believe my game will reach another level.

Recommendations

"Giovanni is a very skilled and savy point guard.  He is an efficient shooter and scorer with a great feel for the game.  He sees the floor incredibly well and knows how to make the right basketball play.  He has room to grow physically and his best days are ahead of him.  He was the starting point guard on a NEPSAC AA playoff team.  He is exactly what coaches are looking for during their seasons – someone that just knows how to play and makes other guys better.  "
- Jim McCarthy, Cheshire Academy Head Coach & longtime D1 Assistant Coach

"In my eyes, I’ve never seen anyone bring more to the table, as far versatility, than G. He doesn’t get pressured by anyone on the court, he always plays at his own pace and that’s what makes him so efficient and smooth."
- Ethan Okwuosa, Cheshire Academy teammate

"He's a great teammate and I really enjoyed playing with him."
- Asa Beyah, Cheshire Academy teammate

Scouting Report

There's a unique maturity about both the way that Rubino plays and even articulates his game. He has the type of feel for the game and court instincts that can very rarely be taught. While those attributes are rarely celebrated at the high school level, they're always critical to the evaluation process for college coaches. Physically, he's still growing into his body and so when you project him out a couple of years, you've got a big point guard with a high IQ, versatile skill-set, and very smooth floor-game. He's the type of guy that a forward thinking D2 school will take a hard look at right now, otherwise he'll end up the D3 star that those scholarship coaches wonder how they missed on in a few years.
