Papa Lo Commits to Massachusetts

6’10 Papa Lo from the Winchendon School by way of Senegal has committed to UMass. This is a major coup for Minuteman Head Coach Travis Ford for a number of reasons. First and foremost, Lo is an extremely talented player especially on the defensive end of the floor where he is one of the best shot blockers in the country. On the offensive end he is still somewhat raw but he is very long and athletic and has already made great improvements in the short time he has been in this country. Second, the frontcourt was a major priority for this year’s recruiting class because of the upcoming graduation of starting center and power forward in Stephane Lasme and Rashaun Freeman respectively, and Lo should be able to step right in and handle a good number of minutes left vacated by the duo’s departure. Third, the addition of Lo elevates UMass’ recruiting class to the 30th best in the nation and best overall in the Atlantic Ten according to Hoop Scoop Online. Fourth, not only did Head Coach Travis Ford land such an impressive class but he did it primarily by staying in New England as four of the six members of this years class are from the area in Lo, 6’8 forward Matt Hill from Middletown, CT and the Tilton School, 6’6 shooting guard Matt Glass from Burlington, VT and Northfield Mount Hermon, and 6’8 power forward Trevon Wilcher from Springfield, MA and Lee Academy. So quite obviously this was a very impressive commitment for the Minutemen

This year Lo plays on a Winchendon team that, despite losing their opening game to Lee Academy last weekend, is not only one of the top teams in the NEPSAC Class A division but also one of the best prep teams in the country. And they will have two great tests this weekend as they compete against Hargrave Military Academy and Fork Union Military Academy in the National Prep Showcase at Assumption College in Worcester.
