This Week’s Notable Performances

David Gibbs – Master’s School (West Simsbury, CT):  The UMass bound guard scored 23 points in a 73-54 win over South Kent’s varsity team to become the all time leading scorer in the history of the Master’s School.  Then on Wednesday, he scored 39 points as Master’s defeated Christian Heritage 100-54. 

Steve Zazuri – Masuk HS (Monroe, CT):  The senior guard is leaving quite a legacy at Masuk HS.  He followed up his 47 point performance last week with 49 points this week as Masuk defeated Immaculate 68-53. 

John Pinone – Glastonbury HS (Glastonbury, CT):  The junior big man went for 20 & 10 for the third time in four games on Monday night as he scored 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in a 61-45 win over Southington. 

Vic Anderson – Wethersfield HS (Wethersfield, CT):  Anderson scored 25 points and pulled down 15 rebounds as his Wethersfield team came up with a two point victory over Weaver High School. 

Ryan Olander – E.O. Smith HS (Mansfield, CT):  The Fairfield bound forward had his biggest game of the season as E.O. Smith upset Maloney 74-66.  Olander had 29 points and 14 rebounds. 

Spencer Noon – Farmington HS (Farmington, CT) & Nick Greenbacker – East Catholic HS (Manchester, CT):  Noon and Greenbacker were both dominant for their respective teams with 33 and 32 points respectively.  Ultimately though, it was Farmington who escaped with a 56-55 upset victory. 

Matt Cloutier – Nute HS (Milton, NH):  The junior swingman exploded for 44 points and 8 rebounds to lead Nute over Laconia Christian in a high scoring thriller 112-55. 

Brad Zapenas – Nashua North HS (Nashua, NH):  The senior scored a game high 34 points, including 22 in the first half.  But he also was clutch at the free-throw line down the stretch to help Nashua North defeat Alvirne. 

Jon Pike – Phillips Exeter Academy (Exeter, NH) & Phil Pressey – Cushing Academy (Ashburnham, MA):  Both players were tremendous in a double overtime thriller between Exeter and Cushing.  Pressey had 35 points, 7 assists, and 7 rebounds and also drained a three-pointer at the end of regulation to force the first overtime.  Pike had 26 points including 3 three-pointers and the game winning basket at the buzzer of the second overtime. 

Michael McCarthy – Dexter School (Brookline, MA):  The junior had 30 points and 14 rebounds in 79-74 overtime victory over Gann Academy on Saturday and 25 points and 10 rebounds in a 49-44 win against Chapel Hill Chauncey Hall. 

Kyle Stockmal – Watertown HS (Watertown, MA):  The junior guard scored 43 points, including 34 in the first half, and saw limited action in the second as Watertown defeated Belmont.  The win clinched the Middlesex League Championship for Watertown and improved their record to 19-2.  Stockmal scored his 1000th point in the game and was recently named the league’s most valuable player for the season. 

Kyle Casey & Derek Retos – Brimmer & May (Chestnut Hill, MA):  The junior forward had 19 points, 13 rebounds, and 8 blocked shots as he dominated the paint while also showing his skill set from the perimeter in a 72-66 win over Buckingham, Browne, & Nichols.  In the same game, Retos scored his 1000th point as only a sophomore. 

Tyler Price – Wilbraham & Munson Academy (Wilbraham, MA):  He made 6 three-point field goals en route to a 27 point performance versus the Pomfret School. It was the sixth time this year that Price has connected on 5 or more shots from behind the arc in a game.

Evan Smotrycz – Reading Memorial HS (Reading, MA):  The junior forward scored 31 points, grabbed 23 rebounds, and handed out 7 assists as Reading defeated Medford 62-61 on Tuesday night. 

Nadir Tharpe – St. Peter Marian HS (Worcester, MA):  The sophomore guard scored 34 points, but it wasn’t enough as St. Peter Marian fell to St. Bernard’s 69-67. 
 
Nikko Acosta – Kents Hill School (Kents Hill, ME):  The post-graduate big man had a huge game with 37 points, 31 rebounds, and 8 blocked shots as he almost single handedly led his Kents Hill team over Brewster Academy’s second varsity team 65-61. 

Ryan Martin – Marancook HS (Readfield, ME) & Derek Libbey – Mattanawcook Academy (Lincoln, ME):  Martin scored 27 points to lead his team to an 89-70 victory over Mattanawcook in Maine’s Eastern B semi-finals.  The Black Bears broke a state record by connecting on 12 three-pointers during the game, including 3 by Martin.  Libbey scored a game high 29 points. 

Dakota Greene – Thornton Academy (Saco, ME):  The senior who is normally known for his defensive intensity set a new career high by scoring 20 points in Maine’s Western Class A semifinals on Wednesday night. 

Mickey McEntee – South Kingstown HS (South Kingstown, RI):  He drained five three-pointers and scored 28 points as South Kingstown defeated Exeter/W. Greenwich 61-53.

Josh Cabrera – Classical HS (Providence, RI):  The senior scored a game high 28 points to lead his Classical team to a dominant performance over Shea 81-54. 

Jeff Holmes – St. Raphael’s Academy (Pawtucket, RI):  He showed his complete inside-outside game and scored 30 points as St. Raphael’s Chariho 62-51. 

Carl Mangum – Central HS (Providence, RI):  Mangum fit four three-pointers but also got into the lane off the dribble with consistency as he scored 20 points and Central defeated Cranston West 76-68.
