St. Mike’s Scores with Kent Post-Grad

The Kent School’s Darren Glover made a verbal commitment to St. Michael’s first year head coach Michael Harding on Sunday, giving the Purple Knights an immediate impact player in their class of 2011.

Glover arrived at the Kent School this fall after having previously starred at Benilde-St. Margaret in Minnesota, where he earned all-league honors, while also starring with Howard Pulley on the AAU and Nike EYBL circuits.

“From the time I first spoke with Coach Harding, he was very smart and extremely passionate about the game of basketball,” Glover said.  “He explained to me his goals and what he wanted to do in order for St. Mike’s to succeed in the up and coming years.  His style of play greatly appealed to me on offense, but especially with his enthusiasm and appreciation of a great defensive team.”

Glover has great size for the backcourt at six-foot-four to compliment a college ready body.  He scores with regularity in transition or from well beyond the three-point line and is also capable of playing both guard positions thanks to his vision as a passer.

The Minnesota native offers a ton of intangibles as well with a tremendous work ethic, tough court demeanor, and obvious leadership skills.

“Coach Harding told me that he needed somebody that could not only score and shoot the ball well, but also somebody that was smart and had a high basketball I.Q,” Glover said, “and when I took my visit and saw how the team played, I truly could see myself on the floor.”

“This is a credit not only to Darren’s talent but more importantly to the strength of his character and work ethic,” said Kent head coach Jason Coulombe.  “He had gotten plenty of scholarship level interest prior to his knee injury in April of 2009 so it’s a testament to his perseverance that he has been able to get back to this level.”

Glover suffered the injury in the spring before his senior season, causing him to have micro-fracture knee surgery and miss the entire summer live period.

“My goal after I had the surgery, which led me to prep school at Kent, was to be able to play college basketball,” Glover said.  “The opportunity that Coach Coulombe gave me at Kent made my dream come true.”

“I think he’s made a great choice,” Coulombe said of his post-graduate guard.  “Mike [Harding] is building a terrific program and St. Michael’s is getting a terrific young man who should be able to contribute right away.”

“Coach Harding and I both believe that the sky is the limit for me now that I am back playing better than I have ever been in my life,” Glover said, “and I believe after talking to Coach Harding, he and the rest of the excellent coaching staff at St. Mike’s give me the best chance to succeed both on and off the court.”
